Inverness, often referred to as being the capital city of the Scottish Highlands, was eventually granted city status in the year 2001 and at this time is the only city in the Highlands. Unusually Inverness has no statutory boundaries which can cause problems with population assessments. The situation is made worse by the fact that the population is rising dramatically, the city has the highest growth rate in the UK. One of the things we know for certain is that the population of the city is rather happy, in 2008 the Telegraph took a survey of the quality of life in 189 cities in Britain and the city came fifth. Therefore, I think we can safely state that Inverness is a pretty alright place in which to stay for some time and this is more than likely one of the reasons which make the city incredibly popular with tourists. It is lucky then that there is a great deal of Inverness bed and breakfast accommodations with most of it being bookable online.
Inverness is also frequently referred to as the gateway to the Scottish Highlands for the obvious fact that it is best placed to make the most of the Highland public transport system and an incredible amount of tourist attractions are relatively easy to get to. Probably the best way to reach them is by using a tour or day trip. A few companies visiting places such as, Loch Ness, Culloden or Urquart Castle or for the adventurous tourists it is possible to visit such places as Orkney on a days round trip. It is also possible to go on a small number of city tours, such as those run by Tony Harmsworth.
A small amount of tourists stay in 2 different places in the Highlands of Scotland for example Inverness and Fort William. Fort William is very popular with sports folk especially ramblers, mountaineers and hill walkers who get excited climbing Ben Nevis which looks down upon the town. In a similar way to Inverness Fort William bed & breakfast and rather like other bed and breakfast accommodation in Scotland it is always inexpensive, excellent value for money and incredibly comfortable, tidy and clean with the best hospitality.
One of the most important things to know is that Inverness Airport is, roughly, seven miles from the city at Dalcross. It is easy to hail a cab or catch a bus to the small but busy airport which is fairly cheap. If you require maps of Inverness then you should get one of the free ones at the tourist office, on Castle Wynd in the town center. While you are enjoying your Inverness vacation you should make a mental note to visit the ‘stone of tubs’ and Mercat Cross, Inverness Museum and Art Gallery and Inverness Castle especially the Castle Garrison Encounter, an enjoyable interactive experience.
