Thoughtless co-habitees are the number one annoyance to many of us and in our booming population the problem is increasing. With more aged buildings being converted into condominiums, and contemporary homing often suffering from flimsy walling or not very much space between properties, it’s incredibly common to hear some sort of noise from your neighbours.
If this is just the occasional ring of a phone or slamming of a door it’s not unbearable and you can count yourself fortunate that this is all you have to live with. Even if you have completely respectable neighbours you could still be subject to their parties, what they’re listening to, the sound of their footsteps on wooden floors or a boisterous child. All these ordinary sounds can grate if you’re constantly suffering from them. You feel like you’re sharing someone else’s every day life, or that your own life is being intruded upon. What is more irritating is noise when you’re trying to sleep – which can disturb the waking day and even affect your health and wellbeing.
If let’s assume that your neighbours not actually doing anything untoward what might you do about it? It’s one thing to want them to stop playing loud music but all they’re doing is watching TV and disturbing your beauty sleep!
The folks next door may not even be aware of the sleep you’re losing. Or they might be offended by your curious quirks! If there’s an easy option to take, such as for them not to wear high heels indoors or to get rid of their alarm clock it’s worth just going round and having a chat. Be smiley and make sure they know they’re not to blame. After all, if you can hear them chances are they can hear you in return. So ask if there’s anything you can do to keep your own noise down – have you ever used your washing machine late at night?
If you live in shared accommodation, talk to your landlord. Ask other residents if they have experienced a problem too – you could get the tenament sound tested to see that it complies with regulations. Of course, some landlords are more concerned than others. If your landlord has insulated to regulatory standards, the responsibility is back on you and your own feelings about the disruption.
Sometimes fitting acoustic installation is the quickest solution. It doesn’t have to be expensive, but you should get an expert to look at your home first. An expert will be able to find you the most effective solution.
